Dr. Steven Lim
Steven Lim is an outstanding teacher. He won the award for sustained excellence in tertiary teaching at the government’s 2006 Tertiary Teaching Excellence Awards. He’s an economist who spends three quarters of his year at Waikato Management School and the remainder as visiting professor at Senshu University in Tokyo, and he consults to the Asian Development Bank.
Dr Lim links with Asia mean that what he’s teaching is real, fresh and relevant. In Asia he leads training courses in state sector reform as well as leadership. Participants come from six different countries - China, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, all countries working through economic and state enterprise reforms and needing guidance to perform effectively on global markets.
These Asian links mean that Steven has contacts in high places in the region, and for Waikato’s executive education participants there are opportunities to work with him on research projects. So alongside his consulting work in Asia, he has researched health issues, the removal of landmines in war-torn areas and the social impacts of transient populations.
His students say he has a knack for making difficult concepts both interesting and easy to understand and that he has the ability to interact well with students in both large classes and in more intimate teaching environments. He has also written about successful teaching and given conference and workshops on teaching practice.
