Merehira has worked extensively within the tertiary education sector where she has held several roles within Te Waananga o Aotearoa over the years, as well as being involved in the national working party with the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). Merehira’s appointment onto the Komiti Whakahaere with the Te Arawa Lakes Trust makes her the only female on the committee.

After achieving her Post Graduate Diploma in Business Enterprise (PGDipBE), Merehira, enquired about the MBA Programme. However, after just beginning a new position and having other commitments, she was unable to pursue the MBA. Five years later, Merehira knew that it was time for her to return to study and excel in her career. "When I enquired about the MBA again, I noticed that the College had a partnership with the University of Waikato in delivering the MBA, and it was at that point that I made a decision to enrol onto the programme.”

One of the key highlights throughout the MBA for Merehira, was the whanaungatanga amongst her peers as well as teaching staff.

"My colleagues supported each other and continuously kept us all together to make it to the end” says Merehira.

Throughout her study, Merehira faced several challenges along the way, one being able to find the time to complete assessments, especially whilst working full-time, and keeping up with other commitments.

"There are going to be sacrifices, but they are small sacrifices for a long-term gain.”
